What Is Meditation All About?

What do you think of when you hear the word meditation? Is it sitting in stillness and silence for hours on end, contemplating the meaning of life? If it is, you might be surprised to learn that this is far from the only form of meditation.

In the past year, there has been a lot of talk about meditation and more people seemingly trying to get into the habit of meditating more regularly. It’s understandable that we’re all looking for ways to improve our mental health, but if you’ve never meditated before you might be wondering what all the fuss is about.

As CBS Denver recently noted, meditation is actually all about practicing awareness. Erica Ballard, CBSN Denver’s health and wellness contributor, explained that the purpose of meditation is to improve your awareness.

“A lot of times when people start meditating they think they’re doing it wrong because they see all these thoughts flow through. But remember - meditation is the practice of awareness and in the beginning, it’s awareness of thought,” she said.

ITV recently shared a guide to getting started with meditation, noting that it’s best to start by meditating for a short amount of time to begin with and gradually build this up. You also don’t have to be sitting in a darkened room, you can meditate as you’re walking around the park if you prefer.

The key is to make sure that, wherever you are when you’re meditating, you’re not likely to be disturbed as this will allow you to truly relax.
