The last year has been particularly tough on all of us and we’ve all had to make some serious adjustments to our way of life, which has certainly had a big impact on the mental health of the nation.
In fact, it would be surprising if you hadn’t struggled at some point over the last 12 months - an awful lot has happened and it can be very difficult to be surrounded by so much uncertainty, confronted with it on a daily basis.
If you have been struggling with stress, anxiety and depression recently and aren’t quite sure what to do, you might find it particularly beneficial to give meditation a try. Spending just a few minutes in a meditative space can help centre you and make you feel more balanced - before you know it, you’ll be meditating every day.
What’s great about meditation is that you can practice it absolutely anywhere. The idea behind it is simple and you don’t need any special equipment to practice it, so you can simply take a few minutes out to help address how you’re feeling, when you’re feeling it, giving you immediate relief.
There are all sorts of benefits to practising meditation, including improved self-awareness, higher self-esteem, more confidence, more patience, improved concentration, decreased stress levels, greater focus, better pain management… the list goes on!
And it needn’t be difficult to get started, either. It centres around the breath, so breathing exercises are the best place to begin. What about trying some square breathing?
Breathe in for four counts, hold for four counts, breathe out for four counts, hold for four counts… do this for a couple of minutes and check in with yourself to see how you’re feeling. You might be surprised by the results.
