Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT can improve your state of mind and therefore your life. It takes practice and patience and when it is combined with mediation and mind training it improves mental wellbeing quickly. So what is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive behaviour therapy is a type of psychotherapy that talks about the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

CBT discusses how you think about yourself, the world and other people and how what you do affects your thoughts and feelings

When you change how you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour) these changes help you feel better.

CBT is a talking treatment and focuses on the here and now.

CBT understands it is the past that influences our lives and perhaps this is how problems have arisen, but CBT focuses on looking at ways to improve your mental wellbeing now.

CBT EXPLAINS IT IS NOT THE EVENT WHICH CAUSES OUR EMOTIONS, BUT OUR INTERPRETATIONS OF THE EVENT.

WHAT WE THINK OR WHAT MEANING WE GIVE THAT EVENT

BELOW IS A SIMPLE EXAMPLE OF INTERPRETATIONS INTERPOSED ONTO AN EVENT

YOU WALK IN TO WORK AND A COLLEGUE FAILS TO ACKNOWLEGE YOU. THIS CAN BE INTERPRETED IN MANY WAYS.

YOU MIGHT THINK THE COLLEAGUE DOES NOT LIKE YOU BECAUSE NO ONE LIKES YOU (CAN LEAD TO DEPRESSION)

YOU MAY THINK IM GLAD THEY DID NOT ACKNOWLEGE ME BECAUSE I WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY TO THEM AND THEY’LL THINK IM  BORING (ANXIETY)

YOU MAY THINK THAT THEY ARE BEING IGNORANT AND SNOTTY (LEADING TO ANGER)

A NICER RESPONSE FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND STATE OF MIND IS THAT THEY JUST DIDN’T SEE YOU

CBT helps you understand the reciprocal relationship between, thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Mental suffering comes from vicious cycles of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

The diagram below is an example of a depressed vicious cycle

CBT aims to break these vicious cycles by challenging or changing thoughts and behaviours that cause unwanted feelings.

CBT is one of the quickest ways to improve mental health, and when it is combined with meditation and mind training it works even faster.

CBT can improve all aspects of your life.
